How to Choose the Right Neighborhood
Spend a little time there. Take a walk around the area, sit down in the local coffee shop, and get a feel for what the neighborhood has to offer. What you want in a neighborhood may be a specific set of desires, but your response to an area can and should be emotional, too. How does an area make you feel? You will never know unless you spend some time there.
Think about your family-based needs. Do you have children? Do you want to have children at some point in the future? If so, you will likely want to be close to a highly-rated school system. You might also want to think about the time you will spend commuting. Do you mind spending a lot of time in the car, or would you rather be close to home?
Determine what kind of home you want to live in. Some communities offer only one type of housing style. Would you rather live in a large, single-family home? Or are you looking for a condo or an apartment?
Decide what amenities you want to have close by. Would you like to be able to walk to restaurants or stores on foot? Do you want a suburban enclave away from it all? How far do you want to drive to the grocery store? Consider these questions when zeroing in on the perfect location for your next home.
Think about those aspects of a neighborhood you probably don’t want. Most people want to avoid high-crime areas, but there are some other areas you may want to avoid. If you have a young family, you might want to avoid the bar scene, for example – but, if you’re younger or single, you might want to immerse yourself in just that.
Do your research to determine future value. There are some pieces of information that will be useful in determining what kind of future value your neighborhood will have. For example, look at how much the value of housing has changed over the last five or ten years. You could also look at what kind of developments will be happening near you in the future. This will help you to determine what kind of investment you’re making.
